Watermelon Music - The Melon Ball
1970 Lake Blvd Suite 1, Davis, California 95616
All Ages Show!
Opening the night will be an acoustic set from Boston-based performer Carissa Johnson. Hailing from Boston MA, Johnson has proven to leave her mark and she is just getting started. She got her start playing bass in Boston bands for a few years before stepping out to pursue her own music. With a debut full-length album winning «Album of the Year» by the Limelight Music Awards and a nomination for «Best Punk Act» by the Worcester Music Awards in 2016, Johnson continues to push ahead, writing and producing enthusiastically honest songs. With influences evident in her songs, her sound pays tribute to seventies punk and new wave, yet remains authentically her own. It's an aesthetic that's proven appealing to fans of all ages. Carissa Johnson is known for her straight-forward lyrics and her driving, four on the floor melodies, her «heartening anthemic rock» stands out among her contemporaries. In April of 2017 Johnson won Boston's legendary 38th annual Rock and Roll Rumble. Determined to share her music with the world, she continues to book her own tours and play shows throughout the country with or without a band. Carissa is currently on tour across the US in support of her sophomore release, Only Roses (May 2016).
— Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter Vanessa Silberman will be performing live at The Melon Ball on Saturday, July 22. Vanessa's live shows (often touring solo or featuring other players) and music has been compared to the raw bare bones rock 'n roll of Nirvana & The Ramones along with the appeal of Liz Phair & Christie Hynde, authenticity of classic artists such as Patti Smith & Neil Young & the pop sensibilities of commercial radio artists such as Paramore. She is also widely known for having a very strong DIY ethic & wearing many different hats in the music business --having worked for heavy hitter's in the music business such as Dr.Luke as well as for company's & places ranging from Epitaph Record's to the Foo Fighter's Studio 606.
Her band Diamonds Under Fire was around for well over a decade and self-released numerous EPs, toured around the US 10 times — also played Canada, the UK, SXSW & SSMF. In Los Angeles, ether solo or with the band Vanessa's music has made its mark on all the known venues including El Rey, The Troubadour, Viper Room, The Echo, Bootleg Theatre and many others. Diamonds Under Fire was featured on 4 Vans «Off The Wall» CD Compilations as well as had features on NPR.com, Buzzbands.la, LARecord.com, LAWeekly.com plus regular spins on commercial and non-com radio. Vanessa also had a cover call-out on in June 2007 issue of Guitar Player Magazine.
— The musical vision of Caitlyn Whitfield, Pastel Dream is a Davis-based «dream pop» band that brings together melodic guitar riffs and tranquil vocals to create an indie beach inspired sound. These are songs you can dance to or just chill to :)
