Strategic Commission Against Totalitarianism Mission Statement

To protect our democracy against authoritarian encroachment by identifying and challenging threats to our democratic institutions and civil rights through peaceful action.

The Commission will co-ordinate with existing civil rights and resistance organizations to provide to the Wellstone Progressive Democrats of Sacramento County accurate information on discrimination against women, immigrants, people of color, LGTBQ individuals, and other minorities, and recommend endorsements of and participation in local actions combating such discrimination.

The Commission will place a special focus on institutional discrimination and police militarization. It may organize actions under the supervision of the Political Director against such organizations. It may also, within the confines of the law, investigate and expose the affiliations of public officials with hate groups or other organizations with a vested interest in curtailing the rights of a minority or the public at large.

The Commission will also research, predict and recommend action on other threats to our democratic institutions and constitutional rights—including, but not limited to, threats to the integrity of our elections, the abridgment of voting rights on any basis, government surveillance and limitations on freedom of speech and of the press.

The Commission may make motions to the general membership based upon its findings. It will be organized in the same manner as standing committees, and its membership determined as if it were a standing committee, as described in WPDS Bylaws sections 8.02 and 8.05.

All actions of the commission must be consistent with the purpose of the club.
