You guys have been clamoring for a Strictly Lindy Hop contest for a while now and we've heard you. So go find a partner because on January 19th we're bringing back the Midtown Stomp Strictly Lindy Hop contest...2018 edition! Our scene's dancing has grown leaps and bounds since our last contest in 2016 and we're excited to see what everyone has to throw down. Please note that because of the contest we'll be extending swing dancing till at least 12:30 am.
The West End Stompers will take the stage to provide the music for the night including the finals of the contest. Over the past couple of years, these guys have become one of our favorite bands with their expert knowledge of Swing music and Hot Jazz. These local musicians are simply awesome! Led by the Justin and Brandon Au they've played all over the country including Camp Hollywood with Jonathan Stout for the National Jitterbug Championships.
7:00 pm — Lindy Hop 1 Class
7:00 pm — Lindy Hop 2 Class
8:00 pm — Beginning Drop-in Classes (included w/paid admission)
8:30 pm — Contest sign up start
9:00 pm — Social Dancing to the West End Stompers
9:45 pm — Contest Prelims (estimated time)
10:30 pm — Contest Finals (estimated time)
Cost: $12 (no extra cost for the contest)
You'll enter the contest with a partner. There are three rules to the contest. 1. Throw down, throwing down wins 2. You cannot switch partners 3. See rule number one.
The longer version of the rules is still pretty simple. This is an amateur contest. If you're an instructor you can't enter. If you've placed at a national level comp, you can't enter. If you could be considered a pro...you can't enter. If you're worried, just ask Scottie.
We don't care who leads and who follows. We don't care if you switch between leading and following (as long as they don't switch partners). We don't care about the gender of the partnership at all. The only rule for gender is that the partnership is made up of two human beings.
Air-steps, drops, lifts, dips, and other tricks are allowed. That doesn't mean flash and trash. Good dancing is still the pillar that throwing down is built on.
Sign-ups for the contest start at 8:30 pm at the snack bar. Prelims will take place during the first band break. Each heat will dance to three songs each with a different tempo in an “all-skate” format. That means all couples for the heat will dance on the floor at the same time.
The West End Stompers will play the finals. There will be a short warmup song and then a Jam style song where each couple will get 8 eight counts twice through.
Judges will be looking at how awesome your dancing is. Great dancing will beat flash and trash every time. This is not to say that throwing in some well-timed flash won’t win you some points with the judges. Lindy Hop has a long history of awesome flash combined with beautiful technique and incredible musicality.
