Steve Hubbard is a writer, photographer and filmmaker who specializes in stories of the historic west. His documentary film «Power to the People» details how mining camp engineers in the Sierra Nevada developed hydroelectric power plants using their own ingenuity, thousands of miles from east coast factories and suppliers. It was a selection of the Wild and Scenic Film Festival in 2012.
His film «Saving Auburn Ravine» documents the efforts of local volunteers and activists to restore salmon runs to a neglected creek.
His current project is documenting the Auburn Dam, the largest dam ever authorized by congress which was subsequently not built. His forthcoming film, «The Dam That Never Was: How The Sixty Year Saga Over The Auburn Dam Changed History,» will be discussed in his presentation. It is a controversial and fascinating topic of interest. Water is the lifeblood of the American West. Hubbard tries to address the question of why, despite compelling arguments in favor of it, the dam has not been built.
